Excerpt: On the west side of the valley were several miles of rocky ridge. Some rose much higher than others. Cherokee and Flying Hawk trotted steadily toward it. As they got closer, Flying Hawk began to look for a way to get to the top. Soon he spied a place with low bushes and several pine trees near it. He angled that way. Cherokee followed him, trying to visualize what the stallion had seen to make him change directions.
They soon reached the bottom of the ridge, the pine trees not far above them. “This will be the place, I think,” said Flying Hawk. And he began to lead the way up the narrow, winding trail.
Suddenly a great brown bear rose to his full height of nearly 8 feet. He was just beyond the low bushes and very angry that he had been disturbed.
“Cherokee,” Flying Hawk said quietly,“Back up slowly.”
“Father!”

ADVENTURES OF CHEROKEE
Excerpt: She appeared to be about three years old, wearing a long blue cotton dress that reached the ankles of her high top shoes. Her sun bonnet was pushed back from her head of long brown hair and tied loosely in a knot at her throat. She walked this way and that, her direction determined by which wild flowers appealed to her the most. Suddenly she stopped.
Sunee watched the little girl for a moment and then let her eyes search the ground in front of the child. A light movement! A rattling sound! The filly was in a dead run before Cherokee could make a move.
“U tsa natie!” shouted Sunee, as she raced toward the little girl. “Cherokee! Get the rattlesnake!. I’ll take care of the child!”

CHEROKEE, SKIN WALKER
Excerpt: Cheyenne was lined up with people on both sides of the street, waiting for the Pony Express rider to arrive. It was not long until they heard a whoop and holler. “Here he comes!” shouted one man and sure enough, here came the Pony Express rider.
“Get on your horse and get ready to grab the mail,” yelled Major Thompson, and the young Indian, Waya tsu la promptly leaped upon So qui li’s back. “The rider will give you the mail on the run, so head west out of town now,” added the Major. Waving at his friend, Oli ga one last time, smiling ear to ear, he pressed So qui li’s into a hard gallop. In seconds the leather pouch containing the mail was handed over to him and the other rider pulled up his mount. So qui li and Waya tsu la left Cheyenne in a great cloud of dust amid shouts of encouragement.
We are on our way!” shouted Waya tsu la. “At last we will do something important together.”
